The Groundwork North Wales Youth Team has been facilitating the Prince's Trusts Team Cymru for the Wrexham area since September.

A 12-week programme for young people aged 16-25, that offers the chance to develop new skills, gain qualifications, build their confidence, and meet new people.

Part of the project involves the Team Cymru members collectively selecting community projects and challenges to get involved with. One such project was the ‘Veg Patch’ and garden at the Conifers Care Home in Rhosllanerchrugog, Wrexham.

Staff at the care home had approached project participants with a request to transform a small outside space into a ‘Veg Patch’ for residents to use. The participants set about raising some funds to enable them to fund the project by completing a sponsored cycle ride at Alyn Waters Country Park. Between them they rode more than 135 miles.

The Team upcycled the existing benches, painted fences, laid some slabs and gravel and installed 3 large, raised planters and 4 decorative murals.

Annwen Davies Care Home manager at the Conifers wants to thank the Team for all their hard work

“The residents, staff and management would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for your amazing work on the Conifers gardens. What you have achieved in such a short space of times is absolutely amazing.

The residents have been asking for so long for a veg patch and now we finally have it and not just 1 but 3!

The residents enjoyed watching you guys through the window while you were working so hard.”

Charlotte Beesty Youth Practitioner with Team Cymru said of the community project.

“It was great to see the Team put into practice some of the new skills they have learnt. They have made such a difference to this space and are extremely proud of their work as they should be”.

The Team Cyrmu participants are currently taking part in their work placements which include everything from retail and hospitality to IT and finance.
