Groundwork North Wales is thrilled to announce that it has been awarded funding from the Parc Adfer Community Fund to promote biodiversity, enhance the natural environment, and engage the local community in Connah’s Quay.

The funding will support key initiatives aimed at transforming green spaces and alleyways into sustainable, community-focused environments, contributing to healthier lifestyles and increased biodiversity.

The Parc Adfer Waste to Energy Facility, located in Deeside Industrial Park, began operations in 2019. Managed by Enfinium, the facility diverts waste from landfill and generates renewable electricity for around 30,000 homes annually. As part of its commitment to the local community, the facility, in partnership with Enfinium, provides a Community Benefit Fund worth £230,000 annually to support meaningful local initiatives.

The Parc Adfer funding will play a vital role in the ongoing development of Quayscape Community Gardens, a cherished green space in Connah’s Quay. The gardens promote healthy living by encouraging local residents to grow a variety of fruits and vegetables, and it actively supports local biodiversity through an array of microhabitats, including: wildflower meadows, hedgerows, coppice areas, and orchards.

The funding will allow Groundwork North Wales to further develop the gardens while supporting its weekly volunteer sessions, held every Wednesday, and hosting additional community events and engagement opportunities. These efforts will strengthen the sense of community ownership and enable more people to connect with nature.

Richard Aram, Head of Environmental Projects and Conservation at Groundwork North Wales, said:

“We are extremely grateful for the support funding from Parc Adfer. The Quayscape Garden site is an important greenspace in the area with fantastic volunteers, and the funding will help us to support and develop the site in the future."

In addition to supporting the Quayscape Community Gardens, the Parc Adfer funding will contribute to the transformation of two alleyways within Connah’s Quay. These sites have been identified following discussions with local councillors and community representatives. Groundwork North Wales will work closely with residents to restore these spaces into sustainable and resilient areas that can be enjoyed by the wider community.

The project will focus on creating welcoming, accessible, and environmentally friendly alleyways that not only enhance the appearance of these spaces but also foster a stronger sense of community pride.
