Thanks to generous funding from Scottish Power, Wild Ground is excited to launch a new project aimed at enhancing local habitats, providing learning opportunities, and promoting community wellbeing through nature-based activities across North East Wales.

Connecting Communities with Nature

This project will run weekly volunteering sessions, offering hands-on conservation experience and helping to improve vital habitats for protected species, including great crested newts, badgers and bats.

Volunteers will develop conservation skills through practical tasks such as invasive species removal, pond and wetland management, planting, hedge laying, woodland management, scything, and building nest boxes. These sessions will be open to local residents, providing an opportunity to learn, connect and contribute to the preservation of local wildlife.

Addressing Barriers to Nature

The cost-of-living crisis has made it harder for families to engage in beneficial activities, with leisure and extracurricular options often being the first to go. This project aims to break down those barriers by offering free, local opportunities to enjoy nature, gain new skills, and improve wellbeing without the burden of travel costs.

Community Events for All Ages

A series of nature and climate-themed events will be hosted throughout the year, offering immersive experiences for all ages. Activities will include pond dipping, bushcraft, guided wildlife walks, and creative outdoor workshops like making bird feeders and nest boxes. These events will inspire people to connect with local wildlife, learn practical ways to support biodiversity, and experience the mental and physical benefits of time spent outdoors.

Educational Opportunities for Schools

Wild Ground will offer a bespoke education programme for primary schools within the project area. Sessions will cover biodiversity, climate change, and habitat conservation, delivered either at local nature reserves or on school grounds. This programme will provide children with hands-on learning experiences that deepen their understanding of the environment and their role in protecting it.

Why Get Involved?

This project offers something for everyone — whether you're looking to develop conservation skills, find free family activities, or bring environmental education to your school. Volunteers and participants will contribute to enhancing local habitats, supporting wildlife, and fostering a stronger, more connected community.

Together, we can create thriving green spaces, empower communities, and inspire the next generation to care for the natural world. For more information or to get involved, please contact Wild Ground at [email protected]
