The Quay Nature Project works across two connected nature sites in Connah’s Quay, Flintshire, offering weekly volunteer opportunities that engage the local community and support biodiversity.
Broadoak Woods is a mature woodland, while Llwyni Valley comprises mixed woodland and meadow habitats. Both sites are well-used by local residents for enjoyment of nature and spending time outdoors. Although easily accessible from surrounding residential areas, the sites face challenges such as littering, fly tipping, and dog-fouling, all of which negatively affect wildlife and people’s enjoyment.
Funded by the National Lottery Community Fund’s Awards for All scheme, thanks to National Lottery players, this project creates positive opportunities for local involvement while raising awareness of these issues.
The project offers opportunities for volunteers to participate in practical conservation tasks including tree planting, path maintenance, woodland/grassland/meadow management, and creating bird/bat boxes. Alongside this, we are running community events to help people connect with nature, such as guided walks, woodland crafts, and mindfulness sessions suitable for different ages.
As well as improving habitats, the project will support participants to develop new skills, enhance wellbeing, build connections to nature, and build a sense of ownership of their local spaces. Throughout the project, we aim to encourage ongoing involvement by helping people gain confidence to continue activities such as wildlife monitoring, litter picking, reporting issues, and using the sites for recreation.
