Up Cycling will involve the refurbishment of bikes that are no longer fit for purpose.

Volunteers will be led by a qualified Cytech mechanic with various tasks to refurbish the bikes back to being fit for purpose.  The mechanical work will take place at Refurbs’ workshop in Flint. Up cycled bikes will be sold to the community at both Refurbs’ Flint and Wrexham outlets.

Volunteers will be recruited from across Wrexham and Flintshire. Volunteers can gain mechanical skills, customer service skills and practical experience which will benefit their future employability.

The project will work with all five household recycling centres (HRCs) in Flintshire (Buckley, Greenfield, Mold, Sandycroft and Oakenholt) to source unwanted bikes.

The project aims to reduce the number of bikes destroyed or disposed of via the HRCs or in skips, reducing the tonnage sent to landfill and increasing the tonnage reused and recycled, as well as contributing to reducing CO2 emissions in the eligible areas.

Art workshops utilising the non-working bike parts will take place across Flintshire and Wrexham. Bike maintenance sessions will be held both regularly at Refurbs’ main facility in Flint, and as part of ‘roadshow’ events at community venues across areas of Flintshire and Wrexham.

The project will run from November 2019 - September 2021,. This project is funded by Welsh Government’s Landfill Disposal Tax Communities Scheme, administered by WCVA.
