In April 2025 we launched our ‘Nature on your Doorstep’ project, funded by the Scottish Power Foundation, which we’re now over halfway through!

At Wild Ground we’re passionate about providing engaging and informative school sessions to inspire the next generation, through the project we’ve reached a total of 354 primary school pupils across three counties.

Our education sessions have had a biodiversity theme highlighting how biodiversity contributes to a healthy ecosystem.

“…it gave them a better understanding of biodiversity and ecosystems and the links that can be made.  The information shared was set at just the right level and the mixture of classroom and outdoor learning supported this.”

Children attending our reserve-based school sessions had the opportunity to take part in pond dipping, looking at how many different types of freshwater invertebrate inhabit our ponds and the role they play in pond ecosystems.

Our school-based sessions focused on trees. It was great to see how many different tree species could be found within the school grounds, pupils learnt to identify trees using a leaf dial and even worked out their ages by measuring tree trunks!

The project has also funded 15 events which have engaged with 150 people to date. We held butterfly counts and bug hunts, den building and more, and received overwhelmingly positive feedback.

“Fantastic session, very informative. Lovely group, would love to attend again.”

We're grateful to the Scottish Power Foundation for funding this project and enabling us to continue delivering volunteer sessions, events and school sessions in North East Wales.
