Refurbs Flint’s Community Fridge is launching a new initiative to assist in combating food waste and support local communities through an innovative Food Amnesty project. Local businesses, shops, cafes and organisations are invited to participate by hosting a Food Amnesty Tub as a collection point for surplus food items, which will be distributed to the local community through their Community Fridge.
Food waste is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, with thousands of tonnes of edible food ending up in landfills each year. The Food Amnesty Tub project offers a simple yet effective solution: designated collection points in local businesses, shops, cafes and organisations will offer a place short shelf-life or unwanted food items can be placed instead of disposing of them.
"By hosting a Food Amnesty Tub, businesses can play a crucial role in reducing food waste while supporting our community," says Hanna Clarke, Project Lead.
"It's a practical way to demonstrate corporate social responsibility while making a difference in the local community."
Participating premises will become partners in this community initiative by hosting a Food Amnesty Tub. Through their involvement, they will help raise awareness about food waste reduction in our community. Each participating premises will join a growing network of community-minded businesses and receive recognition as a sustainability partner in our promotional materials and community outreach efforts.
The Community Fridge has already demonstrated significant impact in our area. Through this project, we are successfully diverting substantial amounts of edible food from landfills, leading to meaningful reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. We have inspired people to think differently about food waste and community support and provided quality food to those experiencing hardship while strengthening the bonds within our community.
Premises interested in hosting a Food Amnesty Tub or learning more about the initiative are encouraged to contact Hanna on 01978 537040 / [email protected].
Together we can work towards reducing food waste and supporting our community.
